By the time a spring/summer print reaches shop shelves, the design work behind it is months old. Established brands plan a season a year or more ahead, which means the useful forecast for an independent designer is not "what is about to appear" but "what direction will still look right when my product goes live." For spring and summer 2027, four directions stand out.
Direction 1: painterly florals
Loose, hand-painted flowers with visible brush marks on a warm cream or pale-colored ground. This is the center of the season and shows up on dresses, scarves, bedding and wallpaper. Our floral pattern forecast goes through the flowers and rendering styles in detail.
Direction 2: bigger checks
Gingham, windowpane and buffalo plaid at larger scale, and in colors that aren't the standard red and navy. Think lilac gingham or sage-and-ivory plaid. See the check and plaid forecast.
Direction 3: fruit, especially citrus
Lemons, blood oranges, figs and cherries, drawn in painterly or linocut styles. They are a natural summer motif for kitchen textiles, tote bags and resort wear. See the fruit print forecast.
Direction 4: tonal and irregular stripes
Awning stripes in unexpected colors, plus hand-drawn stripes with soft ends and wobble. They coordinate well with all the other directions. See the stripe forecast.

Color mood
The overall mood looks soft but not sugary. Pastels are likely to appear as grounds, with a deeper accent shade to prevent the whole print from washing out: tomato, cobalt or aubergine are good examples. For palettes with hex codes, our spring 2027 color forecast and summer 2027 color forecast go deeper. The pastel patterns category is a convenient place to begin.
Cross-category thread: handmade marks
If one idea ties all four directions together, it's visible handwork: brush edges, uneven stripes, crooked checks. That could be the single most useful decision when you design for this season. Clean, perfectly regular vector prints are not wrong, but they are the default, and defaults rarely stand out in a crowded set of spring listings.
Cross-category thread: scale
Spring prints appear to be moving in two directions at once. Ditsy and small-scale prints for shirting and kids, and oversized prints for statement pieces. The mid-sized, all-purpose repeat is the one that sits in the middle and risks getting lost. For help setting scale per product, read how to scale a pattern for different products.
Building a spring capsule collection
Build a small family of prints rather than one hero:
- 1Hero: a painterly floral at mid or large scale
- 2Secondary: a fruit or leaf print in two or three colors from the hero
- 3Coordinate 1: an oversized check in the hero's lightest color
- 4Coordinate 2: an irregular stripe in the hero's darkest color
Pick no more than five colors across the entire set. That keeps the collection easy to produce across products and makes mix-and-match more natural.
Timing for independent sellers
If you sell through print-on-demand or Etsy, spring and summer product has to be listed ahead of the season, since listings need time to appear in search and on Pinterest. Many sellers work a season ahead. For November, that means finalizing spring prints now and sketching summer, while Christmas is still in market.
Trying the directions
To test these, describe a look in Describe It, for example "loose painted lilac gingham with a hand-drawn stripe coordinate", or pick from Browse Styles. Each pattern appears as a seamless tile in about 20 seconds. New accounts get 5 free credits, and Product Mockups, which are free, put a pattern on 20 products so you can judge it on a dress or a cushion.
