Spring palettes fail at the ground, not the accent. A pale pink flower on a pale cream ground can look lovely on a mood board and vanish on a shirt. The 2027 spring colors worth watching are pastel in character, but each comes with a darker anchor that keeps the print from washing out.

The five palettes below are working directions, not forecasts from any single source. Use them as starting points, then adjust to your product and your printer.

1

1. Butter and honey

A warm, creamy yellow family that looks set to keep going into 2027. It is friendlier than lemon and flatters a wide range of skin tones.

  • #FFF4C2 butter
  • #F6E7C8 cream
  • #E8C872 honey
  • #8A6D3B toffee (anchor)
  • #FFFFFF white for highlights

Best for: gingham, small florals, kitchen textiles, nursery prints. See our butter yellow pattern design guide.

2

2. Pistachio wash

A pale, slightly yellow green that sits between mint and sage. It reads fresh without the cool clinical edge of mint.

  • #E9F1DC pale wash
  • #C9E0B5 pistachio
  • #A8C98F soft leaf
  • #5C7A4D leaf (anchor)
  • #F6F2E6 oat

Best for: botanical prints, linens, wallpaper, stationery. If you want the cooler end, the mint patterns category shows alternatives, and the sage green guide covers the muted end.

3

3. Lilac dusk

Soft purple with a gray undertone, not the electric violet of recent seasons.

  • #EFE8F6 pale lilac
  • #D8C8EC lilac
  • #B9A3DB wisteria
  • #5A4A7C plum (anchor)
  • #FFF8EC warm white

Best for: florals, oversized gingham, bedding, lounge sets. Browse the lavender patterns category for more.

4

4. Clay pink

A pink with brown in it, closer to terracotta clay than candy. It looks sophisticated in a way that bubblegum pink doesn't.

  • #FBE9E1 blush
  • #F2C9BC shell
  • #E4A596 clay pink
  • #9A5A4C rust brown (anchor)
  • #F7F1E8 cream

Best for: dresses, bows, wedding stationery, swim. It also acts as a bridge between spring and summer palettes.

5

5. Sky glass

A pale blue that looks like light through a window, mixed with a deeper steel for definition.

  • #EEF6FA mist
  • #CFE6F2 sky
  • #A9D0E6 glass
  • #3F6E8C steel (anchor)
  • #FFFFFF white

Best for: stripes, toile, ceramics, baby products.

Adding a spark

Spring pastels often look even better with a single hot accent, used in about a tenth of the print. Candidates: tomato red (#E5452F), cobalt (#2B59C3) or aubergine (#4B1D3F). A tiny tomato-red cherry stem in a lilac print, or a cobalt stripe in a butter gingham, gives the whole piece direction.

8

The grayscale test

Convert your design to grayscale. If the motif disappears into the ground, increase the value difference by darkening the motif or lightening the ground. Pastel prints often fail here because both colors have the same lightness. Our color theory guide for pattern designers explains value, hue and saturation in more depth.

9

Building a collection palette

A spring collection works best with a maximum of five or six colors across all prints. Pick one main palette, then borrow only the anchor and one accent from a second. Our guide on how to match colors across a collection lays out the method.

Pastels shift the most between screen and printed fabric, since slight changes in ink density change the perceived color. Order a printed swatch of any pastel before you commit to a run. For prints across products, remember that a light color looks stronger on a large wall than on a small tote.

For what these palettes look like in actual prints, see our spring/summer 2027 print forecast and the pastel patterns category.

Testing a palette

Describe It lets you put a palette into words: "loose florals in pistachio, lilac and clay pink on a warm cream ground, plum stems". Each pattern is a seamless tile in about 20 seconds. New accounts get 5 free credits, enough to test two or three of these palettes on the same motif.

Frequently asked questions

What colors are likely to be popular in spring 2027?

Directions to watch include butter yellow, pistachio green, soft lilac, clay pink and glassy sky blue, usually paired with a deeper anchor color so prints keep contrast.

How do I stop pastel prints from looking washed out?

Add one darker anchor color, such as plum, leaf green or toffee, and use it for small details like stems, outlines or a stripe. Also test the print in grayscale to check the value range.

Should spring palettes have a white ground?

Pure white can feel cold. Warm cream, oat or a very pale tint of the main color gives pastels a softer, more expensive look.
