A camp-collar shirt is mostly a flat rectangle with a pocket, and that is why it is the product driving so much print conversation for next year. A boxy shape with a straight hem and an open, flat collar gives a motif room to breathe in a way that a slim dress shirt never does.

What follows are directions to watch for 2027, not measured results.

1

The camp collar is a print canvas

Short-sleeve camp-collar shirts, also called revere or Cuban-collar shirts, come in viscose, rayon challis, linen blends and light cotton. All of those drape well and take digital print cleanly. Expect the print on these shirts to get bolder than the quiet checks and micro-patterns that dominated the office-casual years.

Two directions to watch:

  • Painterly tropical. Not the cartoon palm tree, but loosely brushed leaf shapes in muted tones, such as banana leaf green (#6F8F5B) with clay and bone. The tropical floral direction becomes quieter and more graphic here. See the tropical pattern design guide for motif ideas.
  • Border and panel prints. A shirt printed with an engineered border at the hem, or a contrasting yoke, treats the shirt as a layout rather than a repeat.
2

Conversational prints, grown up

Novelty prints, where recognizable objects are scattered across the fabric, are a familiar shirt category. The 2027 version looks set to move away from jokes and toward specific, observed subjects: espresso cups, vintage cameras, fishing flies, tiles, record sleeves drawn without readable titles. Draw them flat, with a limited palette of four or five colors, and keep the objects small enough that several appear across the chest.

The usual trap: a motif that lands badly on a pocket. Check where the pocket falls and decide whether the print should match or contrast.

3

Small geometrics that read as texture

At the other extreme, tight geometrics carry the shirt that a man wears to a meeting. Think foulard-style tiles, tiny hexagons, scaled-down Greek key, pin dots and micro-trellis. Pick two close colors, such as navy (#1F2A44) and slate (#5C6B80), and the pattern becomes a quiet texture from a distance and a pleasant surprise up close.

Geometric patterns like these also photograph without moiré more reliably than fine stripes do. They mix easily with jackets and knitwear, so they appeal to the person building a wardrobe more than the person buying a statement piece.

4

Retro, the 1960s and 1970s way

Retro patterns continue to feed shirt design: wide bowling-shirt stripes, abstract tile squares, wavy lines, sunburst geometry, earthy 70s browns and oranges. See the retro 70s revival guide for the palette and shape language. Expect the revival to lean on desaturated versions of these colors (rust, mustard, olive) instead of full-strength orange.

5

Engineering a shirt print

Shirt areaWhat to check
Front placketSame motif height on both sides; big motifs and stripes show errors
Chest pocketMatch the pocket to the body, or cut it on the bias to contrast
CollarLarge motifs get cut by the fold; use a small repeat or accept the break
Yoke and sleevesPattern direction changes by design: a deliberate choice, not an accident
HemA border or a plain strip prevents awkward cut-offs

Scale rule of thumb: for most adult shirt sizes, a main motif between roughly 1 and 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5 cm) reads well across the chest. Larger than that and each shirt size shows a slightly different part of the print.

6

What to make first

If you are planning a capsule, three shirts cover the main directions: one painterly tropical, one conversational print in a limited palette, and one small geometric. Keep them in the same neutral base color so they mix, and match the repeats on the placket. The guide to scaling a pattern for different products walks through the sizing logic.

Frequently asked questions

What print trends are coming for men's shirts in 2027?

Three directions look worth watching: camp-collar shirts in conversational or novelty prints, small-scale geometrics that read as texture, and retro revivals drawn from the 1960s and 70s. These are forecasts, not measured sales.

What is a conversational print?

A conversational print is a novelty print built from recognizable objects, such as lemons, sailboats, cameras or tableware, scattered across the fabric. It gets the name because the motifs invite a comment.

How do you match a print across a shirt placket?

Align the repeat so the same part of the motif sits at the same height on both sides of the button placket. Bold stripes, checks and large motifs show a mismatch immediately, while dense small prints hide it.
