In much of Sweden in late June, the sky never gets fully dark. The sun dips for a few hours and the horizon stays pale pink and blue, and people respond by staying outside, eating at long tables, dancing and picking flowers. That is the feeling a Midsummer pattern has to hold: a night that doesn't end, and a meadow in full bloom.
Midsummer around the solstice is celebrated across the Nordic countries and the Baltics, and it blends older solstice customs with the feast of St John the Baptist on June 24. This post focuses on Swedish midsommar, with notes on its neighbors.
What actually happens
The Swedish celebration is Midsommarafton, the Friday between June 19 and 25, which in 2027 is June 25. The elements are a sketch of the pattern vocabulary:
- The maypole (midsommarstång). A tall pole wrapped in greenery and flowers, raised in the village and danced around, often to the children's song Små grodorna*.
- Flower crowns. Garlands of wildflowers and birch leaves worn by people of all ages.
- The seven flowers. The folk custom of picking seven different flowers in silence and putting them under the pillow, to dream of a future spouse.
- The table. New potatoes with dill, pickled herring, strawberries and cream, set outdoors with flowers running down the middle.
Meadow flowers to draw
Draw what grows in a Nordic meadow, not a florist's bouquet.
- Oxeye daisy (prästkrage)
- Buttercup
- Red clover
- Harebell (blåklocka), often called the flower of the Swedish summer
- Wood cranesbill (midsommarblomster, literally "midsummer flower")
- Cow parsley and meadow grasses as airy fillers
- Birch twigs and ferns for the garlands
A dense, tossed arrangement in the millefleurs tradition, with flowers at three sizes and grasses in between, feels like a meadow. Our types of ditsy patterns guide covers the small-scale versions. For loose, natural arrangements, the wildflower patterns category is a good base.
Folk painting for the frame
Sweden and Norway both have strong folk-painting traditions that sit comfortably around a flower field.
- Dalarna painting. The province of Dalarna in Sweden is known for the Dala horse and for kurbits painting, a style of stylized flowers and leaves in red, blue, green and yellow.
- Rosemaling. Norway's decorative folk painting, with C- and S-shaped scrolls, leaves and flowers, developed in the 18th century and was used on furniture, bowls and walls.
Use them as borders, corner pieces and framing devices, and learn the tradition before you copy one. The Scandinavian pattern design guide is a good starting point, and the Norwegian patterns category covers the rosemaling side.

Beyond Sweden
In Norway and Denmark, the evening before June 24 is St John's Eve, marked with bonfires by the coast. In Finland, juhannus is traditionally celebrated by lakes with bonfires. In Latvia, Jāņi involves oak-leaf wreaths and flower crowns. Each has its own details, so name the country you're drawing from.
Timing
Midsummer is a June occasion, so list in April and design in February or March. The solstice itself is around June 21, and the Swedish celebration is Friday, June 25, 2027. It overlaps with Pride Month and Father's Day, so the seasonal pattern calendar helps you plan.
