Catching a seam problem before you print is one of the cheapest checks in the entire pattern design process — and skipping it is one of the most expensive mistakes, since the same flaw that costs nothing to fix on screen can cost real money once it's on printed yardage.
The offset filter check
Most raster image editors include an Offset filter that shifts an image by a set amount, wrapping content around the edges. Setting the offset to exactly half the image's width and height moves the original edges to the center of the canvas, putting the seam directly where it's easiest to see and evaluate — this is the classic, decades-old method for spot-checking a seamless tile, and it still works as well as it ever did.
Tiled preview tools
Rather than checking one seam at a time, a 2x2 or larger tiled preview shows the pattern repeated across multiple copies simultaneously, which catches both edge-matching problems and a second, subtler issue the offset check can miss: an obvious repeating rhythm or unintentional diagonal line that only becomes visible once you can see several repeats at once, not just one seam in isolation.
What to actually look for once you're previewing
Beyond an obvious hard seam line, check for color banding at the edges (a stripe that reads slightly different from the interior color), any accidental mirroring or duplication that reads as a "kaleidoscope" effect, and whether a large motif near the edge gets awkwardly cropped in a way that reads as an artifact once repeated. All three are common, all three are fixable, and all three are far easier to fix before printing than after.
Testing at actual scale, not just on screen
A pattern that looks fine tiled small on a laptop screen can reveal problems once printed at the actual intended scale — a subtle seam becomes obvious at wallpaper size in a way it never was in a thumbnail preview. Whenever the budget allows, a physical test print or swatch at real scale is worth the small extra cost before committing to a full production run.
Every pattern generated through a proper seamless-tile workflow gets this testing built in automatically, with a tiled preview available before you ever export. Start in the free pattern maker with 3 free credits, or browse pattern styles for the full range.
